Describing Singapore's political system

A friend from Hong Kong and I were discussing about different countries within Asia and eventually came to a conclusion that Singapore was a good place to reside and work in. He also recently applied for a job opening in Singapore and is awaiting news on the success of his application.

He added “Singapore is probably a good place to be in compared to the other countries. It’s got a good mix of conservatism and openness. The only thing is that your totalitarianism sucks big time.

I can’t say I am well-versed and knowledgeable in political regimes and ideologies. But I think using “Totalitarianism” to describe Singapore is an exaggeration. That seems kind of like communism already. (Or is it actually one and the same thing?) Maybe something like “Authoritarianism with a mix of Democracy” or “Guided Democracy” would describe Singapore better haha.

If he really ends up living and working here, I’d ask him again after he has been here for a year or so how he would describe Singapore’s political system.
