Zain
It's his birthday. If he were still around, he would be the same age as me.
I think he’d have been a high-flyer with that intelligent brain and wealthy family background.
That impish grin, that insolent face, that floppy fringe. That “heck-care” bad boy attitude at such a young age…I still remember it all. He sat behind me in our P6 class.
There were times I felt I could strangle him, other times when we were good friends…
It’s been 13 years since he was robbed of his place in this world by throat cancer.
Rest in peace dear pal...

je suis triste
Saturday night was spent with the French classmates. “Welcome to the Sticks” ended its run prematurely so we caught “Tokyo” instead. It turned out to be an extremely arty farty show. And we left feeling groggy, bored, restless and in need of better things haha.
Brotzeit proved to be an okay place. The sausage platter was lovely though the accompanying sauerkraut was a little too sour. The rest were a little bit of spoilsports, some left early to go home, some left to go cheong elsewhere…and in the end, only Kyne and me were left, with 2 pints of lager and a warm chocolate cake to while the rest of the night away. I turned out to be a bit of an aunt agony, as did he. It was nice chatting..been awhile sice I did that with anyone on a one-to-one basis.
Sunday was a day of study. And a day of feeling upset.
Monday afternoon was crappy. Our Kangoo outing turned out to be a bowling and arcade session. The weather was just not cut out for us that day. Still, I’m glad that after years of not playing bowling, I still crossed 100 points haha.
All said & done…Nevertheless, I still feel I’m in a tumultuous period. Yes, I’m acting up again. For those who’ve known me for a few years will know I dive from one phase to another. Bipolar, to be exaggerating. (Hmm, or maybe it might hold some truth?)
Self-pity, self-doubt, self-annoyance, self-depreciation, self-inferiority…these amongst other things are clouding my mind right now. My future, my studies, my health, my everything…I’ve lost myself in the past few days. Thinking about a lot of things and then again, thinking of nothing. Mad, tired, confused, depressed, upset. Lol…I can be too much of a handle for myself to handle I guess...:)
I won’t be logging onto blogger that often now. We’ll see how it goes.
Maybe only in office since it’s my lull period. And the thoughts has more time to run wild.

Of Sponges
If I had to use a single word to describe him, I'd call him a sponge.
He absorbs information like nobody's business lol. And his insatiable curiosity about things is commendable...
He takes the effort to find out about things. To know the whys and the hows and the how-comes.
And if you talk to him about something he is unsure of, he'd be sure to Google it and do some mini research on the Net. And thereafter he'd share his new-found knowledge with you.. ahha...
There should be more of such people around!
And I think I really should learn from his spirit of learning!
活到老, 学到老!!!

Mmmm!

Big D's Grill

http://www.hungrygowhere.com/singapore/big_d_s_grill/
I had lunch with HC and my vendors today at Big D's Grill.
Which has gotten some good reviews on food blogs over the last few months or so..
It was interesting. A large stall set in a coffee shop.
Similar to the ubiquitous zi-char stalls you would see in coffee shops all over the island.
And of course, you can imagine the setting. The coffee shop was below a HDB block, in a nondescript sleepy HDB heartland.
It was in Bedok actually. Just opposite Temasek JC.
It was really kopitiam style. Round tables with red plastic chairs. Fans mounted high on the walls and 2 mini TVs mounted on racks fitted on various pillars.
And Big D's Grill concept is...to sell high-end meat products in the heartlands.
The stall had Kurobuta Pork (High-end Japanese Royal Pork), Black Angus Beef, Wagyu Beef, Australian Beef, Kobe Beef, yada yada....
Of course it also had the normal Battered Red Snappers and pasta and all...but the main draw was the special items mentioned above.
Prices were definitely much much cheaper than what you would get if you went to Lawry's or Aston's or the other steak places.
I ordered the Black Angus Ribeye (200gms) which came with coleslaw and lovely fries. The rest of the 3 guys ordered the Kurobuta Pork. Mine was $30 and theirs was $36 each.
Strange to be chewing on such delectable high-end stuff in a kopitiam.
Nah, strange sounds a little negative haha..Allow me to rephrase. It was refreshing to have taken such foods in a sleepy kopitiam.
And the background music for the day?
Haha Hokkien songs, with ahpeks squabbling in the background.
And aunties chopping chives and spring onions on their wooden chopping boards.
My beef was excellent. Juicy and tender. I ordered it medium done and it came just nicely seared on all side with the middle a light shade of pink.
I'm glad I was the only one who took the beef. The pork turned out not as nice. Hahaha...;p
All I can say is ZAN!! 赞!!!
Unique concept, reasonable prices and a friendly atmosphere!
Check out the blog entry & the equally lovely pics on ieat.ishoot.ipost.

SpongeMich Round Shell
Highly Thirsty and Highly Absorbent with a High Capacity for holding large amounts of information
I'm now a house brand sponge.
Lower quality, Less Absorbent.
I can still take in things...but at a slower rate and sometimes I drip them away.
Will gingko nuts help? Hahaa....
Man, age makes a difference! Yikes!
M&M
That is the crux of doing system testing.
Staring at the screen and going through every single function available has made me somewhat oblivious to the going-ons around me for the past few hours...
Eyes are feeling a little tired now so thought I'd take a break from the testing and just yak abit to myself in the virtual world....
Listening to Stephanie Sun now....lovely vocals on a wet and cold Thursday afternoon.
But yay! It's Friday tomorrow already... haha.....Paktor-ing with the man again...
Housework day today. Booorrrinng. Mop floor. Wash Clothes.
The Near Days Ahead
The man is throwing me to one side this weekend.
He’s going diving with some of his colleagues. And I, who has been medically certified to be UNABLE to dive for the rest of my life, will be staying on in cloudy, rainy and recession-hit Sillypore.
AND THEREFORE, I have made some plans for myself.
Saturday
French movie with the French classmates after our class…whee!! So exciting! Been a long time since we had an outing together! Hope I remember to bring my cam to camwhore a little hahahaaa…..After movie drinks at German bar Brotzeit at Raffles City thereafter! Woot Woot!!
Sunday
Oh well, supposed to be a lazy day but I guess I’ll spare 3 hours of my time in the afternoon to pop by Ah Seng’s place in Eunos. Baby Zoe is one-month old liao!
Time really flies man. From rowdy young adults in hostel days, now we’re working adults, married or about to, some with kids, others running their own businesses…gosh.
I don’t wanna grow up!!!!
Monday
Kangoo time again. I am still coughing a little. Irritating thing just won’t go away fully. Argh. Won't run too far this time round. Go slow and easy. Hope I see some cuties running in ECP hehe.
Bought a new Adidas singlet again…gonna wear it on that day! And oh darn, I gotta stop buying such singlets...though the cut is really good!!! hehe..

Mercy Killing?
Morbid as it seems, this is will be a rudimentary baseline of discussion amongst Singaporeans now that the topic has been broached by the local media. Interesting that it took so long for such a topic to be raised considering the fact that euthanasia has been a hotly debated subject in many countries for many years, especially the western folk. (But then again, they are a more vocal bunch of folks..hmm mm ;p)
Assisted Dying. What an oxymoron. What a paradoxical phrase.
Viewpoints of moral, ethical, legal and social grounds intersperse on this subject. Human rights issues fill in the gaps in between. And now finally in Singapore, the stigma of such touchy subjects is now being discussed...Kudos too to the liberalisation of the media space in the last couple of years.
There will never be a right or a wrong approach to this. It will forever be an issue of morals and ethics, with an equal number of people standing on either side of the fence and still many more sitting on it. I really wonder when SG would reach a conclusion on this. And if SG would really decree a change in law to legalise the act.
I watched a documentary on it a few years ago and I asked myself then if I was for or against the notion of it. I have had my doubts but over the years, I figured myself to be somewhat in favour of it. You could put the proportion down to 60-40. Not very convincing, but it's still a stand and I'm not sitting on the fence.
Oh well, we'll see what the authorities have to say. I'm pretty sure the forums are abuzz with discussions on this..
To end off, how different anyway is euthanasia from committing suicide? One's assisted? The other's not? Hmm mm.
Little Froggy Comes to Play
Heng sent this to me this morning after reading about Coll the Troll and the irritation she (or "it") was causing me.
I must say. I LOVE THE GAME~!!!
Can I even call it a game? Hmm mm...hhaaa....
Good things must share hahha so have fun playing!
In The Spirit of Things
Was thinking of some of these when I was on the train home and then later when I was taking a shower..interesting what one can come up with if you put your mind on it.. haha..
===========
Loads of expressions are used in the English language and I wonder how did they ever come about...
It rains cats and dogs and you suffer from pins and needles and you hear cock and bull stories.
If the pot calls the kettle black then what does the pan call the wok?
On the subject of oxymorons..how can a "daily special" be special if it appears on a daily basis?
And there perhaps isn't a "constant change" for if something remains constant, then there is no change?
How can you "act naturally" if you don't act when you are natural? How can a "graduate student" be a student if he's a graduate? There is no such thing as an "open secret", it should technically be called news already if everyone knew about it.
How can very good and awfully good and terribly good all mean the same thing?
If the little uns of chickens are called chicks? Then why aren't the little uns of ducks called dicks?
If the plural of louse is lice, why ain't the plural of grouse called grice?
If there is one you call it a sheep, but if there are two you can't call them sheeps.
Colours that don't run are fast but people that don't run are slow. You cut up a tree after you cut it down. You can rat on a person but you can't cat on them.
You can have a person and some persons. You can have a people but why can't you have some peoples?
p/s: How do you keep your "eyes wide shut" anyway?
Clar-ree-fee-kay-shen
Forgot to mention that when I hurriedly did a copy/paste action during the day after I read the mail.. haha...
Short of misleading others into thinking what a smartass I am.. haha..but I'm not a crony.
So thought I'd clarify.
English at its Finest
We will begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese; Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice, Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice. If the plural of man is always called men, Then shouldn't the plural of pan be call pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why shouldn't the plural of booth be call beeth?
Then one may be that, and three would be those, Yet hat in the plural would never be hose, And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren, But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
There is neither egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig neither is from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one mend?
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on; And, in closing, if Father is Pop, Â how come Mother's not Mop?
vroom vroom? nah.....*phut phut phut*
Time for a tuna sandwich and a hot cup of milo.
Engine is slow to warm up today and slow to start.
I'll try not to let anything get me down today.
Err, more specifically, not to let Coll the Troll get me down today.
Jiayou Jiayou Jiayou!
p/s : Am planning for trip but not sure where to go. Last few days of the year or first few days of early next year....still the monsoon season so most of the island resorts are out of the question...Shanghai or Beijing seems interesting...hmm mm.....
6pm = TIME TO RUN OFF!!!
I think part of the motivation to leave on time was that um, I had no motivation to work hard yesterday ahahha...;p
I was prancing around at 4-plus, disturbing others and seeking out others who felt equally unmotivated yesterday..heee.....
Went back to my desk at 5-plus sent out a few emails...and then floated around somemore....
And then voila!! 6pm!! shut down time!
It was nice to reach home and still see the last slivers of daylight!!!
I think I should leave on time more often...Woot Woot!!

Coll the Troll
I should not allow The Coll to get to me.
But why am I feeling so utterly pissed off this morning after my discussion with her?
Wah sibei dulan!!!
I mean, if you're not open to people commenting on your work. Then don't ask us for our opinions.
If you're not open, then don't ask!
Simple mah....why give me attitude when I give you my comments??

Somewhere Somehow

Somewhere somehow
The other half of your heart is beating
To the same rhythm as yours
To the same tune as yours
Somewhere somehow
You're staring at the same sky
You're looking at the same moon
You're under the same stars
Somewhere somehow
You just know
Your other half is going about his/her own things
Thinking of you at the same time you are thinking about him/her
Somewhere somehow
In this vast wilderness
Of pulsating hearts
I found my other half

I saw an Indian man today screaming at a lady in the MRT station. I assumed her to be his wife. They didn't seem to be quarelling because she was just quiet, head slightly bowed and he was just ranting at her in a language I didn't understand.
But I didn't need to understand him to know that his was a very pissed off man. Typical Indian man with a thick noustache, like those you would see in Tamil movies. And the wife was a typical Indian woman in those movies, clad in a maroon sari...
They were standing at one of the exits of Tampines MRT...people were staring at them. But the guy just went on and on and on.
This isn't violence per se...But it's still a form of humiliation and ridicule. Screaming at her in public like that.
Come on, men, women, old, young. We're all humans. We all have our own right to dignity and respect.
Sigh..
Huggies

glitter-graphics.com
I wanna give him a tight tight hug when I see him on Friday...
Right now, I can only contend with talking to him over the phone...
I Love You~!!

I love this graphics so much!! Darn cute!! haha...:)
Love my baby...and I really hope the next few weeks will be ok for him..
He's been working OT alot lately cos of the ups and downs of the financial markets..
Interesting Riddles...
I've to say, he's pretty adept at emailing now...but he only knows how to use hotjmail cos that's what I taught him ahhaha...Doubt he'll know how to create an account with Yahoo...;p
Anyway, here's 5 riddles...I got 2 correct out of 5...so well...have fun!!!
1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him?
2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away ?
4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday?
5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!
THE ANSWERS TO ALL FIVE THE RIDDLES ARE BELOW
Answers:
1. The third room. Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead. That one was easy, right?
2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of herhusband, developed it, and hung it up to dry (shot; heldunder water; and hung).
3. Charcoal, as it is used in barbecuing.
4. Sure you can name three consecutive days, yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
5. The letter e, which is the most common letter used inthe English language, does not appear even once in the whole paragraph.

And he was more than willing to teach us...
Here's one for your vocab as well.....;p
"une salope" aka a bitch
==========
I love my classmates....haha..
Each have their own quirky traits and are so individualistic...
I guess a good rapport has been built up between us over the last one year plus of seeing each other every saturday.. aha...:)
Cher - the 40-something year-old wine connoisseur who really has nade wine her business...she imports wine & sells them to corporates or her own niche group of wine investors...absolutely loves dogs, is really smart and has so much drive it makes us 20-somethings ashamed at ourselves...
Eric - the CD, VCV, DVD loving tax accountant who frequents Gramophone at Cathay so much we suspect he has the hots for the salesgirls there... hahaa...and oh yes, he loves the bubble milk tea at the shop at Dhoby Exchange and goes there every Saturday after class....
Yang Ching - the Taiwanese native who has called SG his home for the past 9 years, who speaks Singlish like any other local and who serveed NS like any local boy. Currently studying in SIM and has an absolutely quirky sense of humour
Sean - the huge hulk of a man..haha he'll be called a bear if it weren't for the fact he wears clothes and speaks English and swears in Hokkien. Currently studying in NIE as a trainee teacher..slightly eccentric but we love him the same...He seems to know a little of everything!
Kyne - the smooth-talking fella with a wonderful sense of humour. Put him & Yang Ching together and you get loads of laughter for everyone...Smart smart guy with a clear idea of what he wants in life...or at least gives people the impression so haha...and here;s another bloke who seems to know a little of everything!!
Commando Germs
That common brownish cough mixture most GPs give to their patients.
1 bottle of Dhasendyl did nothing to impede the proliferation of my cough germs...
Am onto my second bottle now.
This time the doc has given me Dhasedyl mixed with Codeine.
Codeine's the pinkish cough mixture, usually stronger than Dhasedyl if it has not been diluted with other substances...
I hope it works this time round..
The cough is really disrupting my sleep...
And it's the first time I ever had headaches cos I coughed too much & too hard..
xianzzz...
I feel drugged haha...The last cough I had was in August. Just 2 months ago.
My running has been halted yet again cos of this bout of cough...:(
Weddings and more weddings
I'm the coordinator of the night..
Most likely the mad woman running aorund when carpark tickets run out or when the wine bottles run low.
The mad woman cue-ing the couple when to march-in, when to go upstairs to change and when to come back for a 2nd march-in...
And the mad woman liasing with the banquet manager for anything else which might crop up...
Thank goodness music & video is not put unde r my charge.
I am so non-technical the video might die on me if I put my hands on it.
Chiewz said this to me: "Wah eh, you're like the standard wedding helper!!"
Gosh...with another one to help out with in mid November...
I myself am beginning to think I am...
Hmm mm...maybe I can make a living out of this...hmm mm....
Wedding coordinator business...hmm mm...
Alison & I have talked about this before too...hehe....

Spend Spend Spend
The economy is screaming...some financial institutions are bleeding.
And here I am shopping like a woman freed from jail..
For the last one week, I've spent more & bought more clothes than I have in the last 6 months (or maybe even 9 months).
Hmm mm....hehe
down down down turn...
Now that the psychological threshold has been broken...more hell will break loose in SG.
As it is, Europe, US, Japan are all flailing....stock markets are going haywire...and people are scrambling... I think even the Thailand & Indonesia stock exachanges have stopped trading.
SG is already in a recession but the first to feel it will be those in the financial sector.
It hasn't really filtered down to the retailer/consumer levels yet.
But soon it will, soon it will.
It's been 6 years since the last recession.
I'm somehow glad I'm a civial servant and managed to enjoy some form of good bonus last year.
There might be no next bonus...who knows.
And oh well, for those woh graduated in 2006 & 2007, lucky for them for those were booming years...

And the dream is um, of a sexual nature
The Shell That Croaks
No, lemme correct that. I could only croak or grunt.
Took a glass of water after my morning bath and I managed to start talking.
Albeit with a very very scratchy, husky voice.
Popped in a lozenges, grabbed my bottle of cough mixture from the fridge and off I went to work...
Voice sounds better now. But still croaky.
Call me Froggy Shell..

Here Dicky Dicky...

Can-Do
Disclaimer: I got this in an email and am just repeating it here lock, stock and barrel. I apologise for whatever grammar mistakes within. I think there're a few. Whatever it is. Do watch the video.
But read the story first before you watch it...
It is truly inspiring. This is what I guess people call "Can-do".
========
The girl (Ma Li) was a beautiful and promisingprofessional ballerina when she lost her right arm in acar accident in 1996. She was only 19 at that time. There after, her handsome boy friend walked away fromher.
She tried to kill herself only to be saved by her parents. Her love for her parents gave her the strength to live. She learned how to live her life independently and one day someone asked her to coach a Children’s dancing group.
From that point on, she realized she could not forget dancing. She still loved ballet. She wanted to dance again. So she started to do some of her old routines. But because of the lost of one arm, she had also lost her sense of balance. It took a while before she could even makie simple turns and spins without falling. Eventuallyshe got it.
Five years later in 2001, she was invited to compete at the 5th national special performing art competition for handicaps and won the gold medal. That success gave her the hope to return to her beloved stage.
In 2002, a handsome 20-year-old young man, Li Tao fell madly in love with Ma Li who ran a way from him for fearof being hurt again. After she disappeared in Beijing,Tao searched her up and down despite his parents' strong objection and ridicule. He finally found her dancing in a bar. They have never been separated since.
They were very broke when SARS was spreading because all theaters were closed. In 2004, he got a license to be her legitimate agent and was trying to help her develop a unique performance. In a cold snowy night, when the two huddled in an underpass to wait for sunrise in order to catch a bus after a long day at a movie shooting site working as extras, she suddenly had the urge to dance in the snow with him. She had used her dance to tell him her story so manytimes before and this time, after their 'dance' ended, he suddenly realized that THIS should be her unique performance.
In September 2005, Ma Li came to know of a 21-year-old young man, Zhai Xiaowei who had lost his left leg in anaccident. He climbed on a tractor when he was 4 years old and fell off the tractor and lost his left leg.At the point when the doctor told him that his leg will have to be amputated, Zhai Xiaowei's dad asked his young son, 'The doctor will have to amputate your leg. Are you afraid?'
Young innocent Zhai Xiaowei couldn't comprehend whatwould be so different so he said to his dad: 'No, I amnot afraid.' His dad then said, 'You are going to face many challenges and difficulties in life, are you afraid?' The boy asked, 'What are 'challenges and difficulties?' Do they taste good?' His dad laughed with tears, 'Yes, they're like your favorite candies. You just need to eat them one piece ata time!' Then his dad ran out of the hospital room in tears.
In 2005, when Ma Li first came to meet Zhai Xiaowei, he was being trained to be a cyclist for the national special Olympics. He had tried high-jump, long-jump, diving, swimming, and just settled on cycling. He had never danced before. Ma Li persuaded Zhai Xiaowei to dance with her. As he had never danced and suddenly he was being asked to dance with one leg. He turned her down.
But she didn’t give up. He finally agreed with some reluctance. Zhai Xiaowei initially didn't understand how he could'dance,' so Ma Li invited him to see her performing in a dance, with another male actor. The title of the dancewas 'Hand-in-hand'. Zhai Xiaowei felt that he saw a perfect soul dancing on the stage and agreed to give it a try.
Ma Li and Li Tao (Ma L's boy friend) treated Zhai Xiaowei like their younger brother and they stayed under the same roof during the intensive training and practice that were more than one year. One would not be able to imagine the kind of challenges and difficulties they faced.
Zhai Xiao Wei had no dancing background and Ma Li is a perfectionist. She started to teach him Dancing 101. Their dance partnership broke up a few times because Zhai Xiaowei had no concept of using muscle control with his body and a few other basic things about dancing. When Ma Li became frustrated and lose patience with him, he would walk out.
Eventually they came back together and started training, hiring a choreographer to design routines for them. All they did was to train and to practice from 8 a.m. to 11p.m. day-in and day-out until the three of them ran out of money. Their future looked very gloomy until early 2007 when Ma Li and Zhai Xiaowei decided to participate in the 4th CCTV National Dance Competition in China.
And the rest is history.
In April 2007, they were one of the finalists among 7000 competitors in the dance competition. It is the first time a handicapped couple ever entered the competition. MaLi and Zhai Xiaowei won the Silver medal with the 99.17 high score and not to mention the highest audience popular votes. They became an instant national hit. The end result was beyond their wildest dreams.
In the video you will see them dance beautifully, and legitimately beat others in the competition! Here is the video of their performance at thecompetition. The dance title is 'Hand-in-hand' which in fact tells the life stories of both Ma Li and Zhai Xiaowei
http://www.learningchamp.com/hand-in-hand/dance
Their performance brings tears to my eyes each time when I watch it. It was just so touching and motivating. You will be touched...The next time when you hear yourself or someone else say,“I can’t”, just play this video.
I sincerely encourage you to forward this email to your spouse, your children, family members, relatives, friends, colleagues and everyone that you know. It is just so heart warming to read the story about these two young people and watch their performance. Please spread the words as the world need more of such encouragement and inspirational stories.
Growing Older is Mandatory, Growing Up is Optional
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze.
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards o n the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began,
We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty -eight.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.
She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.
GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL.
We make a Living by what we get, We make a Life by what we give.

Went for Zhang Hui Mei concert at the Indoor Stadium..
She rocks big time man...She's soooo petite and her voice like just overwhelms all of us.
I teared during most of her slow songs...
And it was amazing when she stopped singing, sat in the middle of the stage and the whole stadium just continued singing her songs for her...
Amazing...simply cool~!!
And oh yah, nabeh....I wanna change my digicam!!! Old model...argh...
I can't even zoom in close to her face...

It was impromptu. But 6 of us trudged down to East Coast this afternoon.
Went to try out the Kangoo place...
Rented the stuff and basically tortured ourselves for the next 2 hours...Piangzzz, I think tomorrow my feet will ache like nobody's business....:(
Think we ran/hopped/jumped/jogged/walked on the Kangoo stuff for close to 4km....
Killer afternoon.
For those who haven't got a clue what the hell a Kangoo is...No, I am obviously not talking about the Renault line of vans.
Check out this link! www.kangoojumps.com
It seems harmless enough. But put it on and you'll feel like falling immediately...

Watched "Painted Skin" on Wednesday...
Err....the movie was so-so...but I thought Qi Yuwu did put up a good effort for the show.
At least better than the "dumb-fuck" wooden roles he had in some other movies..
He's getting bigger...in terms of exposure I mean.
From the small screens to the big screens and now to the China & HK markets.
This guy's going places man...And I think he's getting more exposure than Fann Wong in the Chinese markets...
Way to go! Jiayou Qi Yu Wu!
