肌肉山山

Took me awhile but I recently found this Korean-Chinese Youtuber, who's been around for at least 4 years I think.

Content's a little duh at times but overall good and happy vibes. Sincere and didn't look too forced, at least for some of the videos I've watched.

Unique mix of both Chinese & Korean speech and culture. I found that interesting.

Yes I can!

Saw this on IG:

  1. I can overcome this by creating a safe space for myself.
  2. I am worthy, valuable, and more than enough.
  3. I deserve happiness, and I can achieve it.
  4. I become more resilient everyday that I push through.
  5. I forgive myself for past mistakes and choices that didn't work out.
  6. I become better everyday as long as I get up and give my all.
  7. I don't compare myself to anyone else because I was meant to be different.
  8. I know that each day is a new start and a new chance for happiness.
Reminder to self.
Especially on 4, 5, 6, 8.

We are spies!!

***Cue James Bond music***

Been awhile since I had a weird-ass drama dream haha.
It had funkiness, familiarity, nostalgia, jealousy, heart flutterings, disdain, and a whole load of other emotions all meshed together.

And so......

***Cue some more James Bond music***

K and I were spies. Specifically, spies in a secondary school. As secondary school students. At our current age. (I know right...*roll eyes*)

But I don't know what we were supposed to be spying about, who we were spying for, and who we were spying on! Lol...this premise wasn't "stated" in the dream haha...

Anyway, there was a girl student older than the usual age of Sec 3 or Sec 4 students cos she was a transfer student from overseas. She had quite a blatant crush on K as she found him alot more mature compared to the other Sec 3 & 4 guys. (I mean of cos lah, he's a 40-yr-old acting as a 16-yr-old). She followed him around and tried to have her recess meals with him. K tried to "fend off" this girl by hanging out with me instead lol.

And for me, I had a fresh graduate Math teacher who was somehow enamoured with me and tried to get close to me. He too found he could relate to me as I was alot more mature compared to other students. I don't remember how he looked like in the dream, but I think he wore glasses. I remember telling him to stay away from me and not get too close, and I almost blurted out that I was already married but bit my tongue and held back.....cos well...spy mah, cannot reveal real identity LOL.

The dream cut to a scene where we were all hanging out at the school canteen after school. For some absolutely strange reason, the rest of my secondary school friends ended up there as well. And ALL OF US were undercover i.e. 40-yr-olds masquerading as secondary school kids.

I saw Parwin and Peiqi sitting next to us and having their meals. We were all talking and chatting while having our meals. Ally was buying her food and bringing her tray over to sit with us. I don't remember who else was there specifically. It was a blur of faces around K and I and I had the impression Eugene and TH were floating around somewhere too. I remember thinking to myself "Wah, this spy project is growing to such a big scale that they (the spy organisation and folks behind all this) had to rope in my friends as well??!!"

I don't know which school we were in exactly. The guys were all in white shirts and long pants. Us girls looked like we were in KC uniforms (looks like Tao Nan's uniform too lol) but how could we have been in a co-ed secondary school if we were in KC? Lol....I heard someone mention Chung Cheng in the dream and also Dunman High but the uniforms look nothing like those schools.

Anyway.......

While we were hanging out at the canteen, the girl who had a crush on K was still in the background trying to join us at the long table and sit next to him. I gave her dagger eyes, not that she cared haha. The rest of us "complained" that we all flunked our tests...(cos who the hell at age 40 remembers their secondary school syllabus? haha.....)

And then....

My alarm rang....

And the dream ended abruptly so I never knew what happened to that teacher who had a crush on me, or what we were spying on or who paid us lol.....

SO amusing and fun hahaha. :D

Staff

Dealing with 2 staff that needs alot of hand-holding zaps energy and patience out of my workday sometimes.

Glad that I have a manager in between them and myself to weed out more nonsense stuff. But somestimes things like HR and interpersonal matters, and more complex operational issues still come to me.

Reminder to myself to take deep breaths and not let these 2 staff affect me and my thoughts too much.

Age, EQ and level of competence are some things I cannot control and I just have to learn how to accept things, and with various pinches of salt as well.

I have various spurts of optimism and try to guide and teach and hope they improve. I don't know if I'm setting myself up for disappointment because the higher the hope and expectation, the more disappointment and frustration there will be. Sometimes I still try, and then I find banging against the wall, and I get pek chek, and....the cycle repeats.

Maybe one day I will really give up. I don't know...Just cos someone's 50+ yrs old doesn't mean they can't learn and better themselves right?

Vaxx

1st jab done on 9 June.

Took alot of energy out of me trying to manage my fears and worries. Still taking some energy out of me but I will manage myself and I will get over it. Because I can.

Yes I can.

Jason Mraz

Jason Mraz accompanies me for work today. Specifically his Live showcase @ EBS in 2014 in Korea.

I used to be enamoured with him. And managed to see him live back in 2012 when he came by to perform at Gardens by the Bay. Somehow got to listening to him again recently.

Dad

Adrian texted me this morning at 745am. Rare for him to text me, even rarer for him to text me so early in the morning.

He wanted to tell me he's trying to get Dad to get hearing aids. Apparently Dad's hearing is getting quite bad, especially his right ear. Told Adrian that I hope Dad won't be as stubborn as how Granny was back on those days. I remember it took my Dad & Aunt YEARS to nag at her before she relented, and also because she couldn't hear the TV anymore.

Told Adrian to get Mum to speak to Dad as well. It's funny because Adrian shared that Mum can't talk to Dad much. Either he cannot hear her properly and misinterprets what she's saying and they both start arguing, or either one loses patience with the other and they end up arguing again. Whatever it is, they both end end up arguing lol.

I'll see what I can do...told Adrian I'll try to do some research on my end as well...on cost, types of aids available, brands and providers around...

As we watch our kids grow bigger, we ourselves grow older day by day...and our parents get older and older too...Such issues are coming up slowly...I'll need to learn how to adapt and handle them too..."parenting" the parents is one of them...

Jiayou Michelle

Got abit overwhelmed and light-headed earlier on. With slight chest pain.
5 people reaching out to me at the same time, including Nadya asking me stuff about her offline school work.

Got quite frustrated with 2 of them. One's a complaint on work attitude and ethics between 2 of my subordinates i.e. HR matter. Another's a query which should not have been handled by me but by another of my subordinate. But somehow came to me.

Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe.

Hot Hot Sibei Hot!!

The weather is @#$@$&%^*#$W^%$.

Sibei hot.

I toss and turn at night cos of the heat and humidity. Back of my neck and my back gets sticky and it makes me uncomfy. Turning on the aircon makes my nose get stuffed. The fan helps a little but I still get sticky....

So....suck thumb....

Bah..!!

I hope it rains today!!

Reminder to Self

Can feel myself backsliding a little.
Had a small episode where I freaked out at the possibility of a loud noise happening. It's been a year since something like this happened.

Reminder to self to take things in stride, take things easier and self-manage more.
记得,要拿得起放的下,看开多一点,放开多一点。

Trying your best is ok. Just don't try your best till you neglect yourself and your own well-being.

K reminded me too that it's a good sign that my "freaking out" happened after a long interval of a year, compared to the previous time when the interval was maybe in terms of months. True that.

Realised HBL escalated and sped up the stress. Especially when juggling work.
Thankful that HBL's just till the end of this week.

Breathe.
You can do this.
Yes, you can!

Memories

What a coincidence. Previous post is also titled "Memories".

Today's post is about the song "Memories" by Maroon 5. Lovely catch tune. Lovely vocals from Adam Levine yet again. And I love the lyrics too.

Here's to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we've been through
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
There's a time that I remember, when I did not know no pain
When I believed in forever, and everything would stay the same
Now my heart feel like December when somebody say your name
'Cause I can't reach out to call you, but I know I will one day, yeah
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, ayy ayy
But everything gon' be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, ayy
Here's to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we've been through
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
There's a time that I remember when I never felt so lost
When I felt all of the hatred was too powerful to stop (ooh, yeah)
Now my heart feel like an ember and it's lighting up the dark
I'll carry these torches for ya that you know I'll never drop, yeah
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, ayy ayy
But everything gon' be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, ayy
Here's to the ones that we got (oh)
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we've been through (no, no)
Toast to the ones here today (ayy)
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories (ayy)
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo (ooh, yeah)
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, doh, doh
Memories bring back, memories bring back you

Memories

Spent an hour plus going through and re-packing a box I brought back from the old Tampines flat.

It was labelled "Memories" and held many things inside, mostly letters and cards I'd received since I was in P4 and 5 onwards, some autograph books, some diaries and some stuff I'd made (with my Granny's help) for my Sec 1 & Sec 2 Home Econs hand-sewing projects. I think there were 2 or 3 secondary school magazines as well, because they featured interviews with me and Ally. Lol, we were the 2 with the highest number of distinctions in our O-levels.

Brought back many memories going through that box. I spent a long long time flipping through a diary as well. Realised I started journalling since I was in P5 or 6...some years it was quite regular and some years I'd only have 2 or 3 entries. I think uni years were busy so I didn't write at all. Plus I remember spending more time online on a forum than journalling. I didn't as well when I started working. And only picked it up again in 2004...till now. Of course, the last 17 years of journalling has been an online thing on this blog.

I think it helps...I'll suggest this to the girls next time when they get older. It'll be fun I think, if they are keen on it. :)

That diary I was looking at today brought back many thoughts and memories. Reading through my own detailed descriptions, I could remember how I'd felt during those times when I was 15, 16, 17, 18, 19...Strangely, most of what I'd written was on teenage angst, BGR, and crushes that sort of thing. Family issues were simple mentions...Didn't realise I had my fair share of "suitors" when I was young...ahem. Hahaha...

I also found a pile of handwritten letters written when I was in P4, P5, P6 and one from when I was in Sec 2. They were letters to God. Most likely written at a time when my Granny was still attempting to get me to pray to God every night before bed. The letters were very short ones. But at least 2 were a little morbid...where I asked God to let me be reincarnated into a rich family next time or be reincarnated as a horse or a well-loved pet dog. (Strange thoughts for a young kid).

I wonder what I would say to the 15-year-old me...or the 18-year-old me...

13 May little adventure

Alyssa requested to take the train and bus one day and we thought it would be a good idea too since the girls are usually chauffeured around in cars. Only when K goes on reservist once a year or when the car is out for servicing then they'd get the chance to take the bus or taxi.

We scheduled this little trip on Hari Raya morning. Walked down our lorong and took a bus to Paya Lebar Square, had breakfast at Mac and then took the train from Paya Lebar to City Hall. From City Hall, we explored on foot in the hot hot sun and visited the Civilian War Memorial. From there we crossed an underpass to get to Esplanade Park and we saw the Padang, Tan Kim Seng Fountain and the Cenotaph. We stumbled upon a small playground there and let the girls run around abit. I caught my breath there for awhile.

We then turned back and took an underpass that connected to Citylink mall and ended up at Tim Ho Wan for a light lunch. I think it's been a good 10yrs since I've stepped into Citylink. Ever since my workplace shifted from Suntec to Pasir Panjang, I've not really been to that area. It used to be my "playground" lol and I hung around Bugis, City Hall, and Suntec so much. I was in awe of the changes there.

I think the girls had a good time that day....and I am thankful for that.

==========
On a separate note, I am thankful that I did well enough that day. I would have freaked out if I were to do that trip alone. K and the girls were with me and that alone gave me much strength and comfort.

I still had some jitters though. It was pretty manageable when taking the bus, and I was ok till we got to Paya Lebar MRT station. The sudden throngs of people milling around just outside the station and the people walking around within the station did get to me. Slight sensory overload with the noise and chatter and comings and goings.  I kept my eyes mostly on the ground and focused on the girls...In my mind was a constant reminder to "Breathe. It's ok. You can do this. Focus on the girls. Breathe. K is with you." It got better on the train and thereafter things were pretty manageable.

It was a good "challenge" for myself that day...both in terms of taking public transport and walking around outside...

Green morning

Spent some time this morning with some of my plants

Water Jasmine/Water Plum Bonsai
Happy with how this fella's turning out. It's come a long way, having survived an attack of mealy bugs a year ago and spider mites maybe 6mths ago. Earlier this year it starting shedding leaves quite vigorously and I got quite worried when it looked quite bald and weak at some point.

I've been feeding it with organic compost every 1.5 - 2 mths in recent months and it seems to be doing alot better. Greener leaves, many new shoots and flower buds. I hope it stays this way and stays healthy too.

Airplants
The xerographica looked quite dormant and wasn't growing much. Gave it a soak a couple of days ago. It was supposed to be just a 30mins - 1hr soak but laoniang's bird-brain forgot about it and it stayed in the tub for a couple of hours instead. I was worried it would get too water logged or something but it turned out still okay. In fact, its younger leaves seem to have an extra spring and zest to them these 2 days. Maybe the extra long soak did it well haha...:)

The druids and ionanthas with babies are all doing well. One of the caput medusaes spiked for at least 1.5 - 2mths before it finally flowered. The spike turned a very bright shade of red before the flowers started appearing. Several blooms, which popped out one after another with a few days in between...there were 5 flowers so far....so that means the flowering took place over maybe 3 weeks or so....coupled with the spiking, the whole process took almost 2.5 to 3 months...wah....I'm anticipating a pup to pop out soon...hopefully it does "give birth" to a pup!

The tiniest baby which ST gave me for my birthday last year has outgrown its terrarium home. Its leaves were starting to curl a little due to the limited space it was in. I've brought it out to be in the wider open space with its other siblings now...hopefully its leaves will grow into a nicer shape again.

Ficus Ginseng Bonsai
This little one is not so little anymore. I'm proud of it! Its leaves are pretty lush now and looking green and fresh! It wasn't doing very well in its first year and was extremely bald and shrivelled at one point. But it has since flourished after I had an epiphany and started feeding it with organic compost once every 1.5 to 2mths or so. :) This is the very first bonsai I created and it holds a special place in my heart. So far....it's the only one I created and managed to survive haha...I'm not even sure if I created it correctly as a bonsai plant but oh well....noob here. ;p Just mighty happy that it's doing well enough...and looking plump and happy again.

Aghast

Recently read that in our closest country neighbour, there's been a long "culture" of schools and even madrasahs physically checking girls to see if they are really telling the truth when they say they are on their periods and hence cannot go for prayers. Apparently it has become the the teachers' quest to "catch" girls who they think are falsely proclaiming this so that the girls can "get out of" or "siam" their daily prayers.

Both male or female teachers undertake various forms of checking including: feeling the girls' crotch area to see if they are really wearing sanitary pads, literally asking the girls to pull down their underwear, asking the girls to dab their private area with a tissue and showing the teacher the stained tissue later, etc.

Some young girls recently spoke out on this matter and the issue has been gaining momentum.

I was aghast and somewhat angry when I read of this "culture". Like what shitty thing is this? A school should be a safe environment, not one where your teachers feel you up. It's criminal if a male teacher does this! And even if it was a lady teacher doing the checks, it doesn't make it any more legit. No girl should be subject to such humiliating, uncomfortable and stressful situations!! No girl should have to "prove" that she is on her period or not.

Maybe I have 2 girls and that's why I felt indignant. I hope MY's lawmakers and politicians take a stand on this matter and make reforms where necessary. Culture and mindset is indeed an ingrained thing and may take a long time to be eradicated or changed, but I sincerely hope they make headway on this.

Big Auntie

She came to visit on Labour Day and brought me much discomfort.

Was a little doubled-over on Saturday afternoon. I was bloated, crampy, had a bad lower backache.....and was....well....sibei bloated. I even considered taking panadol to manage the discomfort, a thought which had never crossed my mind once in all of the 30 years that I've been having menses. Didn't help that I had a bout of diarrhoea on Friday night.

The older I get, the more jialat the effects are....especially this past year maybe?

Was feeling crampy and bloated yesterday as well but it was better than Saturday.

The bloatedness is still there today but strangely, now my thighs are sore like shit.

Ganbatte....

(when does menopause set in again? 50? 55?......)

Nom Nom

K had Krisflyer miles that were expiring and since we aren't anywhere anytime soon, he swopped it out for vouchers at Fullerton Hotel's brunch service at the Town Restaurant.

We went there yesterday since it was a Labour Day weekend and Alyssa didn't have her swim class.

I think the girls had fun haha...Both were pretty adventurous yesterday and tried the following new things!

  • lobster
  • parma ham (Alyssa loved it so much she probably finished 90% of the portion that was given to our table)
  • salmon sashimi (they'd been refusing to try this for years...and somehow the stars aligned yesterday and both of them tried it and liked it!)
  • braised beef (which was rejected by both haha...Nadya made a face..)
  • broccolini
  • burrata
  • rocket/arugula (Nadya tolerated this more than Alyssa but eventually still declared that she wasn't gonna try it anymore ahhaha)
  • black caviar and some other orangey fish roe (both liked these alot!)
We took a walk at the area in front of the hotel after meal. Trudged across Cavenagh Bridge and walked through a tiny tunnel to bring us to the riverfront. I think it's called Jubilee Walk. Chanced upon a Lim Bo Seng memorial and explored a little more before we headed back. The weather was just too hot and humid to do more walking.

Glad we did something different yesterday!

Hair.....

In some areas, I am less autocratic. I will let the girls choose whether they want their hair long or not.

I asked Alyssa this morning: "Next year you're going to primary school already and need to wake up early. I don't want any fussing ya. Because I need to get both you and Nadya ready."

A: ok

Me: Are you ok if we cut your hair short so you don't need to tie it? Or would you still prefer to have long hair like now?

A: mmmm.....I think I still want long hair like now...

Me: ok, then you'll need to be cooperative ya.

Handling 2 girls in the mornings next year...and having to get both their hair settled at the same time. Ok, it'll probably be just simple ponytails all the way lol....No time for braids or anything more complicated than a ponytail....

If it were my mum, or my MIL, both girls would probably be in super short bobs with super short bangs lol....

backside itchy

As a reminder to K to stick to original plans in his work endeavours....laoniang wrote 2 notes for him and he stuck them on his computer monitor.

One reads "STICK TO THE PLAN!"

The other reads "DON'T KAR CHNG JIONH!"

In other words, the latter reads as "Don't backside itchy!" when translated from Hokkien.

Nadya recently noticed this note and asked K how to read it....and so....she was prancing around the house yesterday evening singing "Don't kar chng jionh! Don't kar chng jionh!" ...

*face palm* parenting moment.

I reminded her not to sing this or proclaim this out loud when she's out of the house....I erm...hope she remembers this....

Where's my blanket?

Woken up by Nadya at 4:44am this morning.

N: Mama, I cannot find my blanket. I searched everywhere in the room and on the bed.

Me: urgh..mm?....arllhhmm...?  ! zzzz...........

Slithered out of bed and helped her find it...but couldn't find it either. Turned out that she didn't even go to bed with it. Her blanket was left outside in the living room the night before when she was using it as a "tudung" during her dress-up play session with Alyssa. K found it and passed it to her.

Went back to bed after that 5-min "fiasco" and when the alarm rang at 615am...I was still so sleepy...

But still, I am thankful that this doesn't occur often. More a rarity than a regular. :)

Ganbatte for the day ahead!!

The Self

Current projects/activities in the pipeline...

  • self-managed learning of Korean through Coursera
  • brush calligraphy workshop and self-managed learning thereafter
  • finishing up half-read books and comics
  • continuing with the walks and getting back to a more frequent routine...a little lax lately ever since I fell sick 3 weeks back.

Parenting...and....growing up

We shifted here in June 2014.

And for the first time in almost 7 years, our kitchen is steriliser-and-milk-bottle-free.

We've gotten rid of the last of Alyssa's Dr Brown milk bottles, and permanently stored away the Avent steriliser which has served us for a good number of years. Stored it away because our helper wants to send it back to the Philippines for her relative to use. We told her it was a very old (and worn out) appliance but she still wanted it so we let her have it.

Managed to wean Alyssa off quite quickly and easily compared to Nadya. The remaining milk tins will be donated or sold off.

With P1 registrations coming up, with Alyssa entering Singapore's formal education school system next year, with Nadya already in P3 next year, with us donating away the playmat we bought in end 2013/early 2014, with me clearing away more clothes that both girls have outgrown...it seems our parenting journey is transitioning to another phase.

Bittersweet to be honest. I really miss those times they were chubby and tottering around the house. Miss the babbles and gurgles. Yet, I'm also excited to see them growing into little ladies.

It's ok Mama

For the last 2-3 evenings, I've been helping Alyssa plan, conceptualise and finally work on her craft piece for her school. She's supposed to use various materials provided by the school and whatever we have on hand at home to create a 扇子, a Chinese fan.

Nadya helped out here and there as well.

Yesterday evening, I realised I made a mistake in my calculation and cut a piece of paper with the wronbg proportion. I muttered "Aiyah, I mistake. Aiyah...I hope I can salvage this."

Alyssa was so sweet and responded with a ......

"It's ok Mama. Everybody makes mistakes. I also make mistakes sometimes too."

Lol....so cute.

Granny

11 April was Granny's 7th death anniversary.

It being a Sunday, I didn't have much chance to ruminate much about her and "talk" to her. Only found some time to do so in the few minutes before bed.

While I think I'm handling things better in the recent couple of years already, content touching on grandparents still gets to me.

Anyway, I love you Mama. I found a pic of you the other day when I was clearing my old stuff. It was from my Sec 1 project titled "My Family". The photo must have been in the late 1930s or 40s. Posting it here for posterity....

> One Year

So fast. I've been working from home for a year and 3 weeks already. I still remember 21 Mar 2020 was physically my "last day"  in the office.

Various highs and lows. From work and job scope changes, to handling both kids during their home-based learning days, to being able to lunch out much more with K, to handling shitty work stuff brought about by an increase in malicious activities online, to experimenting with recipes, to being able to do more walking, etc...

Time zips by....

Work

Not quite looking forward to going back to office, even if it's a "3 days in office" type of arrangement.
Not sure how it's gonna be as yet. While the over-arching policy has been announced by the organisation, at the team/group level, we're still waiting for the announcement by our Executive Director.

80-90% of my own team have indicated to me that they still prefer to be 100% WFH. That includes me. 4.5 out of 5 of my team. One of the ladies is half-half.

Tmr's the announcement. I hope alot of flexibility is given.....

Monitor

Nadya was made class monitor for this term, together with another boy.

She has a badge to pin on her T-shirt everyday now and she's pretty proud of it. :)

We're proud of you too sweetie...Keep it up!

She's set her sight on a junior leader position in the future. I think it's something like a junior prefect but I'm not sure of the duties this role carries. Will leave it to her to navigate and figure out herself how to get there.

Just one or two things that I hope she can tweak though. Her whininess and tendency to complain about anything and everything, whether it's a good or not-so-good situation, she'll find something to whine or complain about. We've spoken to her on a few occasions and reminded her from time to time on this as well. It's slightly better but she still needs to work on it. Let's see how this goes...

Soft

I'm soft.

Have always been. Softer than the so-called strawberries of the generation that just came out into the workforce. Maybe that's why certain things in my life turned out the way they did. Maybe that's why I have anxiety too..

Maybe I have too much emphathy? Maybe I just dislike conflicts too much? Maybe I am too ham ji and bo ji.

Of ballet & gymnastics

Nadya is having her ballet Grade 1 examination this morning. Good luck sweetie!! Months of preparation and practice for this 30-45mins session today. May it go smoothly for you baby girl!

Just realised she started ballet 5yrs ago and I've been a "ballet mum" for that long haha. But this is her first formal graded exam by the Royal Academy of Dance in the UK. :)

I've gotten better at tying hair buns too ;p And using hair gel and hair spray haha.

Alyssa started ballet when she 3 as well. The dance teacher said she was doing pretty ok but I guess Alyssa's heart wasn't fully in it. Alyssa just stopped her ballet lessons in school, and is now taking gymnastics elsewhere. Still taking baby steps in gymnastics but we're happy seeing her smile and enjoy the lessons so far. :)

Sick. Was.

Was down the last few days. Haven't been this unwell since a long time back.

Had a bad congested nose which was constantly leaking last Wednesday. I filled up my wastepaper basket with used tissue and had to put aloe vera gel on my nose to prevent it from getting too raw.

K wasn't doing too good either and woke on Thursday morning with a bad throat. We went to the clinic and....ended up getting swabbed and given a 5-day MC with a mandatory order to stay at home at all times.

The swab wasn't painful, but it felt weird. I didn't know something could go so far back into my head through my nostril lol. Going through it made me cry involuntarily though. The doctor commented that it was ok as it was natural physical reaction, and that he had made many people cry this way already haha.

In any case, we both received negative results 24hrs later....and had the mandatory stay home order lifted.

It's been 6 days since my nose started leaking badly and I'm glad to say I feel alot better today. Nose is still congested a little but I can breathe alot better compared to the start when I was mostly breathing through my mouth. Sore throat's gone as well. There's some lingering cough which I think will clear up on its own soon enough. Voice isn't back to normal yet but getting there. :)

May I heal fully in the next 2-3 days!!

*crrrack*

On the last day of my 5-day MC.
It was sunny earlier on but now extremely dark and cloudy, with a slight drizzle. I wouldn't even call it a full-fledged rain yet but there was a sudden lightning flash followed by a huge-ass crack of thunder.

It was strange but I wasn't that surprised by the sudden loud sound. And my immediate thought was actually "I hope the girls are ok in their schools and didn't get a shock."

Wish I could give them a hug and tell them that it's ok, it's just thunder...and Mama loves you...

4th time back in office since March 2020

Been in office since 9am this morning. It's 3-plus now.

I feel exhausted already. Many things going on this morning and I had to speak to various people in person. (2 colleagues and 1 IT support guy). Not interacting in person for a whole year has made me even more "anti-social" lol....Talking F2F for long periods makes me tired...

I want to hide in my corner and be quiet...and do my own things....lol.

Reminder

This week has been strange for me.

Fatigued, lembeh, stomach cramps here and there, bloatedness, grogginess, difficulty concentrating sometimes, calves aching sometimes...

Taking things slowly now...

I think the symptoms are there...some of them are what I felt back in early/mid 2019.

Need to manage myself better...

要记得, 不能再让自己进入那年的状态....

Borders, cut-offs, delineations.....

Either that or my hormones are acting up alot this time round before my cycle arrives....

Weird dream

I had a dream. A weird one.

I dreamt I was recently hired by Tan Jian Hao, the Singaporean Youtuber. For some reason, he owned a resort/spa and I was hired as the Operations Manager to help turn it around. It was quite a run-down place and the previous manager obviously didn't do a good job at upkeeping the place. Sand was all over the place; fountains, water features and jacuzzis weren't working as they should; dustballs were all over; rattan furniture pieces were frayed and in need of repair; water in pools were not filtered and recycled but stagnant and a little smelly, etc.

Gosh... haha....what a strange dream...
But even in the dream, I felt a little stressed.

Body & mind telling me to take things easy? Note to self...and reminder to self...

Star Pupil!

Nadya was conferred the title of Star Pupil for Term 1 for her class. She was given a magnetic badge that could be attached to her attire as well as a certificate!

Needless to say, she was proud and happy. She was skipping around all evening haha.
We're proud too. :) As are both sets of grandparents haha.

I asked her what does it take to become a Star Pupil and she rattled off a bunch of traits including: needing to be a responsible and respectful person, helpful and kind to others, etc.

Well done Nadya. Keep it up!

Onwards and upwards!

Loud sounds

I have this thing about loud sounds and noises. I get very scared.
If I'm given sufficient warning, I can steel myself and I'll be fine.

I'm not sure how this all started but the earliest incident I know was when I was 8 and at an annual Xmas party at my Uncle's place. I was told I ran out of the house flustered and in tears when they started blasting Xmas carols loudly. I only vaguely remember being in great fear, feeling lost and afraid even though all my relatives were around, and that I couldn't handle it.

I can handle balloons and/or audio sets. But there are times when my defenses are "weaker" and I get triggered by them. A single balloon near me is enough for the fear to well up deep within me and I need to escape somewhere to do deep breathing to calm myself down.

The aircon guys are here today to install a new system for the bedrooms, and change the old piping.

I didn't expect the work to be that loud. The initial drill caught me by surprise. It was the type of drilling where you can feel the vibrations course through your body. I was stuck in the living room with nowhere to go. Could only plug my ears with my earphones. No music was playing though.

I've managed to tune some of the noise out. I hope to be able to concentrate on my work soon.
Today's an assigned day for policy work....

all the tillies

I'm a proud grandmama.

A week before CNY, 2 tillies bloomed wondrously.

The single druid - the "pineapple" I've had for the last few years which I brought home from office - gave no warning and turned yellowish for 2-3 days and then voila, out popped 3 long white flowers. The girls were excited haha. It has since sprung out 2 pups and I'm looking after both mother and pups with care now. :)

The ionantha clump of 3 I had was a mother with 2 pups. Not sure what species of ionantha this clump is....but when I first got it, both pups were smaller than the mum. They've since grown a lot and are bigger than their mum now. Both pups are now full grown and they bloomed a week before CNY too. They blushed into a nice shade of maroon beautifully and then had 3 long purple flowers each! Each of them now have pups of their own. One has 3 and one has 2.

Gosh, wait....I just realised...I am a great-grandmama liao...not just a grandmama haha...

The rubra airplant that bloomed a few months back now has a thriving pup...and the pup's blushing slightly...the edges of its leaves are pinkish....so cute...:)

The xerographica's doing well.

All 3 caput medusaes are doing well, with one of them blushing more than the others. This one had various hues of marron and purple...I wonder if it's going to bloom? If so, it'll be exciting! I've never had a caput medusae bloom before!

The brachycaulos is not doing well though....not sure what to do with it...can only just do the usual and hope it survives....

the heat...the tummy...

Since the weather turned quite warm over last weekend, I've been feeling a little out of sorts.

Tired, half warm, half cold.

Leaky and stuffed nose from the sudden change in weather and the dustiness from the next door's extensive renovations.

Tummy's not doing too good either. Bloated for several days already. It's been manageable so far. Just the sluggishness that comes with it, the upper arm aches and slight breathlessness at times. This morning feels abit worse though. Maybe I'll purge soon, who knows.

Weight's hovering around 47.5kg these few weeks. I'm happy it went up, even if just slightly. :)

Reminders to Self

Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be.

Keep going! Keep walking! Keep moving!

A step at a time. Slowly but surely.

Conversations with a 7-yr-old

During dinner...

N: Mama, do you know Steve Jobs?

Me: Yup...

N: Do you know that he quit college?

Me: Yeah I've heard that before...

N: He didn't graduate but he has a good brain and a very good growth mindset. I like it, I think it's good.

Simisai? Where did that come from?

I probed further and found out that she learnt about Steve Jobs and having a growth mindset to "keep learning things" and "gain knowledge" at her school's morning assembly today. They have 30mins to an hour of assembly every Wednesday morning.

Wow, they teach these to primary school kids? I can understand if it were for the upper primary kids but this was also shared with the P2 children? Wah....

......

Strange. After I took over, there's a sustained increase in weird cases and situations. Even situations that no one has ever encountered before in the 20-odd years that my department's been in existence. Zzzzz...even my staff attested to this....

From court orders served from the US, to an appeal case from a local entity, to phishing complaints and law enforcement agencies knocking on my door......to contracted parties pulling rubbish scenarios on us and other contracted parties giving us other operational headaches......

I hope these taper off soon...laoniang is quite tired...physically and mentally...

Jiayou....

Jiayou...

Jiayou...

Chloe

I happened to text Chloe on Monday to wish her Happy CNY and that I hoped she and baby A were doing well.

And then voila, I found out that they were leaving for the States today. Guess the hairs on the back of my neck have some special sensors or what. It was a bittersweet piece of news for me. Part glad they were making headways in their plans, and part sad to see her leave Singapore.

Glad to have had some short exchanges with her over Whatsapp on Monday and today. She was one of those whom I had no qualms sharing anything and everything with back when I was in my mid-20s. We shared some pretty wild secrets and MSN conversations during those days as well. She knew all, if not most, sides of me back then. And I'd always admired that good, strong mind of hers. She wrote pretty well too. Awesome vibes and flowy passages. Miss reading her thoughts on her blog.

Life as it is with work and kids and her stint abroad and general busy-ness didn't allow much catch-up sessions in the years since then but I was happy to be at her wedding in end November 2018.

I wish her and Atom the very best in the States and of course baby Alisha too!
The pandemic situation's pretty rough in the US now and I hope all of them stay safe and healthy...if there's a chance he gets a job back in Singapore again, they may move back here...so...let's see.

Like I told her this morning: "You always bloom everywhere and anywhere you go."

May they settle down well there and may baby A grow up well!

Dream

I had a dream last night. It had the same recurring theme of me being lost.
But it was in a different setting this time round. It wasn't set in a school or compound or office building.

I was with a colleague and we were trying to get a cab to go home. We thought of cab-pooling and having the driver drop us off at 2 locations. Thing was, we were waiting at a bus-stop for a cab, I don't know why. And we were at a HDB estate as well, though the surroundings were very unfamiliar to me. The road was very busy and it was quite difficult to get a cab. I was increasingly desperate but a cab finally came. I can't remember its colour. I remember it was driven by an auntie though. She ended up going round and round, just not to our homes. She somehow couldn't find her way.

I checked the phone on my map and kept trying to tell her where to go, but to no avail. We were scared shitless and she finally decided to drop us at a cab stand in the CBD area. She didn't take any fare from us. Said she was righteous and since she didn't bring us to where we wanted, she wouldn't collect any fare from us. It was late evening and there was a crowd at the cab-stand. Officer workers trying to get home after having dinner and drinks. For some reason, I lost contact with my colleague. I knew she was somewhere near but she just wasn't next to me anymore and I couldn't see her at all. I felt lost and scared.

And the dream ended....abruptly...no conclusion, nothing.

This theme of being lost in my dreams...has been consistent since many years ago...I may not dream for awhile or have other types of dreams...but once in a while this dream of being lost will pop up, sometimes more frequently, sometimes once in a blue blue moon.

..........

Sometimes I don't need advice.
Sometimes, and in fact, most of the time, I just need a little support and a little encouragement.
A listening ear.
Just being present and around.
Words of comfort.
Words of encouragement.
Words of affirmation.
A calm presence.

Ganbatte

For some people, it makes them feel alive when they exercise and feel their heart rate increase, or when they feel their muscle ache after their exercise. Or when they feel breathless and pant.

I don't. It makes me feel slightly accomplished for a few seconds, and then it makes me uneasy, uncomfortable and nervous. It makes me have thoughts and ask questions like: why is my heart beating so fast? Am I ok? Is this heart rate acceptable for someone of my age and (non)ability? What if I collapse now? Will anyone rescue me? I don't have any ID on me, will they know who I am? Will I be ok? Why do my calves hurt? I hope my legs are ok. I hope I am ok. ......

And that. Is the anxiety at work (and at play).

It is something I work at overcoming alot of the time these 2 years. There are better times and there are worse times. And there are days I surrender to sleep at 930pm because I want to rest my physically tired body, and my mentally and emotionally tired mind. Sometimes, I think it's a form of "escape". And that is why I feel annoyed and exasperated when my sleep gets interrupted. Sleep is an essential recharge to me.

That said, I am still thankful that I do still feel happy and alive when I ......
  • feel the wind in my face
  • feel the sun on my skin
  • hear the girls' excited chatter and pitter-pattering of feet
  • eat nice food
  • watch the sky at dusk
  • laugh out loud uninhibitedly
  • act silly uninhibitedly
  • have meals with my family and/or K's parents
  • laugh out loud when I watch K-variety shows
  • catch up with close friends
  • have a small date with K...
  • ......, etc
Onwards and upwards.
Keep walking. Keep moving.
Keep trying. Keep going.

You can do this.
I can do this!

It. Has. Started.

Reno.

Unit directly opposite us.

Drilling started this morning at 930/945am.

According to the notice put up at the lift landing, reno is supposed to be till 1 June. Though my new neighbour dropped us a card (with some chocs) saying they'll be shifting in sometime end May. That is still at least a 3mth long renovation.

*wails*

noisy & dusty...

hope my skin sensitivities don't flare up....*fingers crossed*

Reiki

There is a particular piece of Meditation music that I usually listen to when working.

Recently stumbled on a piece that is purely on Reiki music and Zen meditation. Wah sibei like!!

Reiki music is my new go-to music now to for when I need calmness and focus...:)

Reading up more too on what Reiki actually is and how it harnesses the body's and Earth's natural energy to boost and improve one's physical, emotional and mental well-being.

That. Chapter.

that long awkward period

where you are no longer a spring chicken

but can't quite count as an old hen either

that strange season

when you discover that your hair can turn white as well

and that wrinkles and crinkles start appearing in your dictionary

that phase

when you start feeling awkward and exposed in spaghetti, tube and halter tops (which were past staples)

and instead prefer to be in loose T-shirts and even looser dresses

that period of time

when you realise your skin no longer "boings"

and that cellulite, sebum, varicose and gravity have started to leave their (unsightly) marks

that hugeass BLT sandwich of a time

when you are worried for both your young ones and your older ones

and are also worried for your own health, be it mental and physical or emotional

that passage of time

when you can no longer hide under the guise of "youth" and "inexperience" at work

and instead are now responsible for others reporting to you

that stage

when you've grown up somewhat

but don't really wish to

that. chapter.

Moody

Mood's not that great on CNY Day 5.

(1) New dress ruined. I kept it for 3 or 4 years at least cos I couldn't wear it last time when I put on weight. Wore it once on CNY Day 3 and just got told this morning it's got patches of stains on it that cannot seem to be washed off. Nabeh.

Hepler claimed she handwashed. And somehow the other dress that she handwashed was fine but this particular dress had stains on it that came from "dunno where". It was perfectly fine when I took it off on Sunday night. How the hell did the stains suddenly pop up??

(2) Bits and pieces of things here and there. All outstanding. Looking after and watching own team members and their work. Now looking after another 2 guys. One of whom is testing my patience. Level of work is not there. Just 4 years younger than I am. I hope he bucks up....

(3) Getting chased by a law enforcement agency for some pieces of work.  >:(

Mortality....and CNY...

MIL, K & myself did our LPAs 2 months ago in December. MIL did up her care plan and wishes too in January. Such issues and myriad thoughts abut mortality were floating around in my head a little since then.

Didn't help that 2 weeks ago, I lost a cousin and 5 days ago, K lost an uncle. Losing my cousin brought back sad memories of when my Granny passed. This cousin of mine was actually my Granny's god-daughter as well. 2 days ago, I found out another cousin's wife (on my Dad's side of the family) found out she has breast cancer and just started chemotherapy, their son seems to have some medical issues as well (young kid of maybe 20 or so?), and my cousin himself is having cataracts and some spine/neck issues. And another much older cousin on my mum's side of the family is having issues with his young daughter (19 yrs old) who seems to have left home to live a life she wants (including switching courses in poly and focusing on her online luxury accessories business).

It's been a unique CNY this year. Heavy on the serious stuff. Making me think alot more than usual.

Yet, I've to say it's been nice on the light-hearted stuff as well. Met up with the Chias & Sam for a quick lunch before CNY, met up for dinner with the Hans as well. Met up with PC & Ally last night at PQ's new place and gorged ourselves silly. The kids had fun playing games as well. Things were not as rushed this year with lesser houses to visit but it still felt fulfilling.

We were inundated with cookies and other goodies this year. Past 2-3 years we only had 1 or 2 jars of cookies, max. This year, we had 3 jars of pineapple tarts, 1 jar of florentines, 1 jar of macademia cookies, a box of taro pastries, a box of egg tarts, some egg rolls, etc...Lol...

Words

A couple of days ago, there was a tragic road accident involving a BMW which crashed into a shophouse along Tanjong Pagar Road. All 5 in the car (including the driver) perished. All were guys aged between 26 - 29. Still young, they had many years ahead of them and I'm sure they had their aspirations and dreams as well.

The accident happened in the early days of CNY and in the sleepy non-eventful days where Covid-19 seems to be the only news around...the accident shocked the nation and sparked many articles. And with articles of course came many online comments.

There were sympathies, condolences, words expressing shock and sadness at such a horrific incident. And then there were the trolls and naysayers. Others with words of admonishment and anger. Some words were harsh, too harsh to be posted online in a public space.

I cannot fathom how people, men and women alike, young and old alike, could muster up such cruel, evil and unfeeling words to admonish the deceased. The guys have already lost their lives, there's no need to say such unkind stuff. It disappointed and shocked me somewhat. That such vile words can come out of people.

Like for the younger ones, do they speak this way or express their feelings this way to their parents?? Do they use such harsh language? Just because their words were expressed in an online space doesn't mean their words can be fully unadulterated. Hiding behind the veil of "freedom of speech" is nonsense as well. Freedom of speech does not mean you can be disrespectful and vile. You can still express your views in a civil, respectful and diplomatic manner.

Gosh, I hope my kids grow up understanding this. It it not ok to be unkind under the guise of "freedom of speech".

Conversations with a 5-yr-old

Early morning, before even brushing teeth.

A: I need to poo.

Me: Orh, go poo lor.

A: *grunt*

(then strange silence for a few minutes....)

Me: Alyssa, are you done?!

A: No...there's still more...I am waiting for them to get changed, have breakfast and then get on their horses to gallop out....

Me: ...................

LOL.....luckily I don't have to rush to work or bathe or anything....

Working with others

I move fast when there is a need to, timelines to meet and bosses to manage. Am handling a small but important project right now, overseeing it with 2 other guys who are not my direct reports but were pulled from other teams. One of them seems ok. The other one is not so ok.

If the 2 guys get lost and cannot keep up, even after an hour-long briefing session and 2 detailed emails with instructions, action items & milestones/timelines, I expect them to self-help and buck up. They can check with me on areas they are unclear of, I am open and approachable.

But ask me things that you should already know, you may get a black mark from me. If I need to step in and move things along for you because you were blur, then you confirm kena orh-gong in my books.

Sent out milestones and instructions yesterday, today you're asking me when I need the item by? What rubbish. Read your emails pls. Digest the info pls. Work things out on your own first. I cannot be mothering you.

Patience. Breathe. Michelle, you can do this!

lines...

The horror when you brush your teeth and glance at the mirror and suddenly realise you have 2 horizontal lines on your forehead...you rub at them and they don't go away.....on closer inspection, they seem deep....and they seem like those forehead lines you see on older (much older) folks....

I'm ok with laugh lines and even eye wrinkles...but forehead...dun wan lah..............

Oh the horror. :(

Will they fill up and fill out if I put on some weight? hmm...

Too soon...

Brenda passed on last night around 8 or 9plus. She was only 48.

I am saddened but a part of me also feels relieved for her for she has suffered physical pain and debilitating discomfort since a few months back. Her last weeks were even more intense.

I looked up to her quite abit. Probably because she was many things that I was not.

I always wondered why and how she had this insane buzz about her, a constant energy ball full of passion and zest for life and people and things she loves. An unstoppable indomitable spirit, really. Her cheerfulness, positivity, niceness, authenticity, genuineness and sincerity touched the lives of many many people. Oh and that infectious laughter and gorgeous smile of hers probably touched the hearts of all who have met her as well.

Her FB page (and her husband's) last night was flooded with hundreds of tributes and messages of support from many people from all walks of life and from various countries. Tributes are still coming in. Even students she taught some 20 years ago have left their messages. Just goes to show how great a person she was, even from when she was much younger. All their testimonies and tributes say the same thing. They touch on her megawatt smiles and infectious laughter, her bubbliness, her faith, her optimism and strength, her creativity and talents.

I remember all the way till I was in my late 20s or early 30s, I would be the one staying at home during CNY at my parents' place. It was because I was the assigned person to be at home with my Granny, to help with entertaining guests when they came over to visit my Granny. Every time Brenda swung by, the house would be filled with her laughter and giggles and happy jokes and sharing of life in general. A great storyteller she was, for she even made mundane bits sound rather interesting. ;)

She was a great cook. Sticking to traditions but also very willing to explore new ways and styles of cooking.  She had plenty of cooking "toys" and gadgets. Her 3 kids were fed very well.

She was very creative. I wondered how she found the space to keep her crafts, especially her crocheting paraphernalia. Her creativity didn't stop at cooking and craftwork. She created fashion accessories. Tons of hairclips for her daughter when she was younger. Many badges and brooches. And scarves and beanies and berets and hats. Little bags and pouches. Even socks and mittens when they travelled to cold countries. And, she found work as a visual scriber.

Oh, and she was lover of K-stuff haha. K-dramas and food.

She was very smart. Not book smart for I know she was not interested in her studies when she was younger. Her grandma used to lament to my grandma. They were very close sisters :) But she was smart in the ways of the world. People who have worked with her in church, in her scribing & facilitating work, etc would probably all attest to this.

She was eloquent and good with her words as well. Expressive but still respectful. She shared her opinions on various issues, even politics, on public platforms, but did it in a respectful way. Agree to disagree.

She was staunch and steadfast in her religion, and as a servant of God she taught the ways of the Lord at church ministries when she was younger. She still did when she was older, just that perhaps parenting also took up more of her time and she couldn't do as much as she would have liked. She was grounded too. And very committed to her family and kids. I often wondered how she could pack in so many things in the 24 hours of a day.

Brenda was a truly amazing lady.

Rest in peace Brenda.

I hope you've met up with Uncle Benny, Uncle Bobby, Ipoh, Mama, Baba Ku, and Granduncle John (Tuanku) already. You're the youngest of the lot up there. I think they'll look forward to whatever Peranakan dishes and desserts you can whip up for them. ;p

The gut, the stomach, the digestive tract.....and everything else in between

半热半冷,是要病了吗?

昨晚泻肚子,隔了一晚肚子还是有点怪。。身体累累的。。。

希望再过一会儿会好些。。

Stomach felt a little off in the morning yesterday but it was still ok, so I think I subconsciously ate more (greedy)....... and I may have unwittingly overworked it thereafter.

I had lunch outside (just simple fish noodles), pork floss bun in the afternoon, dinner....and then pineapple tarts (where I usually take only 1/4 of whatever jam is on the tart)...

When 845pm came...I felt those familiar but forgotten feelings...those stirrings and pain pangs that come and go in the tummy.....where you know and you tell yourself...."ok xiao liao...it's coming"....

And so...stomach spoil time again...

Dealing with functional dyspepsia is a pain in the ass. I eat clean most of the time...and get to cheat every once in a while with fast foods, and other junk foods...sometimes when I least expect it, it hits....but sometimes I know myself that I got too greedy and loaded up on too much junk...自找 sometimes....

Anyway, just have to accept this "condition" and manage it bit by bit....

Compared to 2019, I think I'm doing much better already....

Niam Niam Time

Need a simple rant early in the morning. I know it's Friday but...

I guess the one who stays the longest in an organisation ends up bearing the brunt of the missteps, irresponsibilities, nonchalance (or intended avoidance), bad planning of past staff who have since left or taken on other roles in the organisation.

Let's see. The painful and cumbersome things on my plate which were a result of others' doings:
  1. Cluster Server Project with International Organisation - this has given me ALOT of grief since mid-2019, and I am expecting another 6 more months (or more?) of work to be done for this project. KNN sibei long-drawn, and not my core work scope, and not value-adding to my work portfolio also.
  2. Mandatory technical testing for partners - someone else's project from 3 years ago but my side is bearing the brunt of it. Leading to contractual issues and negotiations and many headaches for my overseas partners.
  3. Many other compliance, enforcement and policy matters - supposed to be done by The Coll. Laoniang quite TL over this. Just because she didn't want to do, she siam-ed many years, she sat on things for so long, but then now they end up on my lap?! Where's the justice? Each of these issues takes time and effort to work through. Even small policy issues need some time and effort for me to run through, think through and then propose a solution or way forward. Some entail research to be done.
But nevermind...

Laoniang will bite the bullet and 继续走继续坚持...

I complain. I rant. I spew vulgarities.
I accept. I take deep breaths. I stretch and meditate.
I continue plodding. I continue taking things in my stride. I continue moving forward.

Food for thought.
To think through whether some of these things should be brought up during my 1-on-1 appraisal/feedback session with my boss.

Call. From School.

2nd time I received a call from Alyssa's childcare centre this week. Every time they call me...I jump, then take a deep breath and brace myself. In case I need to drop everything and get her from school.

More so this week cos K is away for reservist.

Anyway, I am thankful both calls were just to inform me of her falls and tumbles. No bruises or scratches or bleeding. Just slight aches and pain at the areas that were bumped.

May the little girl continue to be blessed, healthy and happy always....

Grammar Grammar

I wrote “….has come back to us on….”

Boss changed it to “….has came back to us on….”

Sigh.

To tell him he’s wrong? Or leave it since it’s internal minutes only.

Pick your battles…..

Think I’ll just leave it....

School bag

When you tend to be a zombie in the mornings
When your attention is divided between getting the kid to put on her shoes and trying to get a taxi on Grab
And when you're also trying to listen to what your kid is trying to tell you

When you're relaxing downstairs waiting for the cab to come
And then when the cab finally comes
And you realise to your greatest horror

That you've forgotten your kid's schoolbag
That you need to seek the taxi uncle's understanding to wait that few minutes more
That you need to unlock the gate again and sprint back home with kid in tow

That you need to call your helper while sprinting
To get her to at least bring the bag down to the 1st floor lobby to save some time
That in the midst of this sprinting through the carpark you still need to ensure your kid is safe and not in some car's way

Oh....what a morning lol...

Kinda winded me a little and made me breathless, partly cos of the sudden rush of things and party cos of the sprints to and from the gate...

Said kid was Alyssa and she was a little bewildered by the rush too haha...

Note to self: please don't be so blur tomorrow morning.....

Of hope and decisions and control

So the thing that got me upset and sad last evening....was that my cousin Brenda has chosen to take back some control of her life and stop all medical treatments for her cancer and focus on palliative care at home instead. Granny was her god-ma too...

She's such a strong person, always so positive and cheerful in whatever situation she may be in. She's smart and articulate, writes very well, cooks very well, draws very well. She's very good with gardening and all sorts of crafts too.

She'd been updating all her friends on FB all these while on her journey with cancer, how it was first diagnosed, her hopsital visits, her recovery, the relapse in 2018, how she was battling it, how these 2 weeks have been very challenging. For awhile, she also documented her journey when she was a writer with The Smart Local.

And finally yesterday, she posted on FB that she'd decided to just focus on palliative care instead.

I'm sure she had her reasons and she'd probably already discussed things with her doctor team and immediate family.

The news broke my heart though. She'd been fighting for so long and keeping up with her upbeat and positive attitude.

I started crying.

But I was also handling the 2 girls and their homework at the same time. They didn't understand what happened to me. I tried my best to handle their work and managed to read a Chinese story to Alyssa first before I sent them to the dinner table and took some time out to myself.

I called & informed my parents, then spent 10-15mins crying and then tried to compose myself, before going back out again and joining the girls for dinner.

They asked if someone had passed on. Nadya was old enough to know such things and Alyssa just mimicked her question. I said no and explained the situation to them as best as I could. Alyssa gave me a hug and Nadya patted my hand. I don't think they understood much of what I was saying but they got an overall gist that my cousin was very sick, may pass on and I was feeling sad over it.

===============

Brenda,
You won't see this but I wish you and Noel all the very best in these few days, weeks, months. I pray that the biggest E will continue to grow and excel in his job and contribute to the family. I pray that E2 and E3 will grow up well too. May E2 inherit your cooking and creative genes and whip up lovely dishes and do up lovely craft projects. May E3 do well in his studies. May Noel stay strong. And lastly, I know when you are weary, you will go Home into His arms. That is your wish. I want you to know you have touched the hearts of many of us with your positivity and strong spirit.

Oh...$^%$@&**(#@

It was an emotional day for me yesterday. I'd already started out abit emo during the day but the day still went well overall. And then evening came and ....

1. I found out a piece of sad and upsetting news. I bawled my eyes out. More in another post.

2. I discovered a pot of aloe on my balcony was toppled over. It might have lain there for a day or two already given that the strongest winds blew on Monday or Tuesday.

3. While trying to save that pot, the clumsy me overturned another pot of byrophyllum. Nabeh, so then I had 2 pots of plants to save and to clear up all the soil from the ground.

4. After settling the pots (the girls were so sweet and helped me out) and showering, I put on my favourite pair of pants I wear for sleeping, tugged on the drawstring to tighten it and then...TMD....*SNAP* the drawstring broke....Put on another pair of pants. Glad that I still managed to salvage the pants by using a spare black shoestring I had and using that instead....

Suaku

I just topped up my EZ link card via the EZ link app. Suaku. a year ago when I was still taking the bus home, I'd still be topping up my card via those machines at the MRT station.

I only just discovered today that I could actually top-up via the app. Yeah while it may be a little risky cos my card details is in the app now....but still.....oh the convenience!

Wonder what other stuff this frog in the well hasn't discovered yet....:)

I should add Nadya's card to my app so that I can top-up her card this evening...

Happiness

Started crying when I heard Ryan from NOC mention this in a video:

"There was a period of time when I felt guilty to be happy. Like I shouldn't be too happy and I can't be too happy. Because who knows, sadness is just creeping up in the corner. Someone out there will "punish" you for being happy. This happiness and success will not last long and you better be prepared for the bad things that are about to come.

It was a toxic mentality and it took me a long time to get out of those thoughts.

A friend reminded me that you should live in the moment and appreciate what you have achieved. Celebrate the small wins. Stop worrying too much about the future or about what might come. Life is a series of ups and downs. That's how life works. Any ups are not meant to last forever anyway so own it and enjoy it when it comes. Just don't keep focusing on the what-ifs and the downs that may come. Because there will still be other ups that will come after those downs.

We deserve to celebrate when a milestone is met or an achievement is reached. And we need to stop constantly looking for the next thing to do or the next achievement to reach because it will never end. And it'll all just get too taxing eventually."

Maybe I cried because it was very authentic. And it resonated with me because sometimes, I have these thoughts too.

Still learning and trying and reminding myself each day to be thankful and appreciate what I have right now, not to worry too much about what may come and to celebrate victories, however small they might be. Go for it, make things happen.

老了

K is having reservist these 2 weeks. While he can still send Nadya to school on most days, I need to send Alyssa to school and pick both girls up from separate places in the evening: one from childcare and one from student care.

Then when we get home I need to settle their shower, work and dinner....

Yesterday, while helping the girls with their work, I was bending over most of the time...bending over their desks, which aren't exactly very high. When they were done and I was clearing up one of the desks...I bent over and then....

OW...

TMD.....

Right lower back started hurting...couldn't even sit properly...

It got better later on and I could sit with less difficulty but.....back's still aching after a night's rest. Can't do stretching much for now cos it aches when I stretch too much...

Sigh....

XOXO

Stared at the 2 girls last night while they were sleeping. And suddenly got overwhelmed by the love I felt for them. Started kissing their faces and stroking their hair.

May you grow up well Nadya & Alyssa. Be strong and courageous and independent. Dream big and soar as high as you want to. Mama & Dada will support the both of you always.

XOXO

Sometimes I get comments from colleagues like "It's Michelle leh! (of course the work is good)" or "Don't worry, we have our guru Michelle here with us."

I don't profess to know alot. I am still learning things and finding out little nuggets of info here and there, even after 13 years with the company. Neither am I exceptional, compared to some others out there and I am vastly pale in comparison to the scholars.

So sometimes it does make me a little uncomfortable when I receive such comments. I may feel "shiok" when I first hear them but actually, I don't want this to create unnecessary false impressions and high expectations of me from others, especially people whom I've just met.

I don't want to disappoint or fall short you know. Like..."I thought Michelle was a 9/10 but actually after working with her, I realised she's only a 7.5".

4Fingers

I'm suaku. I know Korean Fried Chicken (KFC? haha...) has been around for quite awhile but I've never really tried it.

Was at Ally's place on Boxing Day but I only had maybe 2 small pieces of the chicken that I ordered from ChickenUp. It was not too bad so I thought I'd order some today to try again. Ended up with 4Fingers as it showed up on my Deliveroo app that was near us.

I ordered the fried chicken bites with soy sauce.

I didn't enjoy it. Too heavily seasoned for me. Too salty, too sweet, too fried....I think I was fine with 2-3 bite-sized pieces or maybe 4 pieces if I stretch it a little. I was struggling beyond that...taste was cloying and over-the-top....Even MacDonald's (for all its junk/preserved/processed food titles...) feels cleaner & lighter to me haha.

If all such Korean fried chicken have sauces like this...then I think it's not my cup of tea...
I prefer simpler chicken lol...grilled, roasted, BBQ-ed, lightly fried, not too much batter or sauce...simpler and more bland works pretty good for me lol....

I must be one of the rare folks around who doesn't like Korean Fried Chicken...

Of neighbours and friends and ...itching

Stephanie & Jeremy moved out 1.5mths ago. Serene & Chin are shifting out next Monday. Suddenly our 2 closest neighbours are gone. One rental tenant's coming in I think and Serene's unit was sold to a lady from China with a young kid and a husband from not sure where.

I hope they're nice and that we can get along well with them like how we got along pretty well with Stephanie & Serene's families.

===============
Been itching since 3 Jan. Not sure what triggered it. Dust? Hamsters? Food I ate?

Eyes itch from time to time and they feel better after eye drops. Face is itchy, especially the cheeks, and skin feels tight sometimes. Nose is flaky. Sometimes my forehead near the eyebrows are also dry.  Nostrils are itchy and sometimes I rub my nose so much it feels raw and the skin turns red. Sometimes my nose feels stuffed up and difficult to breathe.

There are strange times when even the soles of my feet itch.

Been holding off on popping any Zyrtec. Maybe I should pop one soon? To get rid of any allergy I might be having?

===============
Renovation at Serene's unit will probably start in the next 2 weeks. Heard that it'll be a major reno as the new owner mentioned to Serene that they want to do a major overhaul and remove all existing fixtures and fittings in the unit.

:( I hope they don't hack away the marble and parquet flooring. I hope it doesn't get too dusty also.

My nose, eyes and skin cannot handle anymore dust...*wails*

Wishes

2021. For the year ahead, I hope to:

  • Continue learning how to manage myself even more, and maybe discover new facets of myself
  • Find the strength, courage and determination to keep up with walking and build it up to something more slowly
  • Learn and grow more in terms of work, and how to manage people better
  • Keep up with hobbies
  • Keep up with relationships, be it family or close friends
  • Continue with the decluttering here and there
  • Stay grounded, positive and hopeful!

2 weeks' leave + decluttering

22 Dec 2020 to 5 Jan 2021.

Still had to contend with clearing some work. Sometimes even clearing email drafts via Whatsapp or Teams on my phone. Ran various errands. Did some frantic Xmas shopping and wrapping of gifts. And packed parts of the house.

Didn't get to rest or nuah as much as I hoped to. But oh well...just gotta suck it up.

Spent some time to declutter my online stuff as well.

  • Unfriended some folks on Facebook
  • Deleted some very old messages on Facebook Messenger
  • Deleted some very old Whatsapp messages, group chats, etc
  • Deleted some very old contacts in my phone as well
  • Organised my emails abit more
K threw out half of the stuff in the storeroom. I was pleased haha. It was the first time anybody cleared it out. Stuff accumulated over 6.5 years. Gosh.

I cleared out bags of the girls' stuff as well - old books, old and broken toys, tons of random drawings and doodles, many old art pieces from school, old clothes, old this, old that....Threw out my own stuff as well and organised my letters and papers. Think I threw out at least 6-7 black rubbish bags worth of stuff. It felt good as well.

Thing is, clear liao but...there still seems to be so many things in the house!!! Lol...

And I still have 6-7 boxes of stuff that I was forced to bring back home from my parents' place which they've since sold. Need to spend some time sorting through and repacking them into new plastic boxes we recently got from IKEA.

Bienvenue 2021

2020 went by in a jiffy. It was a blur to me. Days and weeks and months melded together.

While there were losses, there were gains as well and more importantly, I think the gains outweighed the losses.

I started working from home in March and my last day in the office was 21 March 2020. Circuit Breaker started in the first week of April and it was madness for that 1-2 months. Home-based learning took alot out of me. Juggling Nadya's online and offline schoolwork, with Alyssa's offline worksheets, and my own work brought me numerous challenges. I was a frantic octopus, kancheong spider and impatient bull all rolled into one. I suddenly had to deal with meal planning on a daily basis too, not just the weekends. And not just one meal a day but at least 2 out of 3 main meals.

April and May were challenging alright. I lost count of the number of times I made Nadya cry early in the morning when I was trying to supervise and guide her in her work. Math was especially challenging and my BP must have been higher in those 2 months too.

It was a big relief when June came and schools were allowed to reopen. No more videos for kindy lessons and no more primary school online lessons. No more lost tempers lol.

Other challenges included things like not having a proper work desk and chair, not having access to aircon the entire day, having discussions via concalls and video-calls, handling new bosses, etc. There was a period of time I was working on my bed everyday. Till I had various aches. I ended up with a very small desk and a swivel armchair that I managed to squeeze into a corner of my bedroom. The rest of the issues...well, you just live with things and get used to to them.

And...the good stuff that happened in the year that I am thankful for.

  1. The girls learned how to cycle in the May/June period. They had their existing bikes and balance bikes. With nowhere else to go, they were on their bikes in the carpark most evenings. K eventually ordered kiddy bikes from Decathlon and the girls very quickly learned how to ride them.
  2. I didn't have to contend with my anxieties of taking public transport to and from office. And I saved a ton of time with commuting out of the picture. Easily 2hrs plus of my time each day was freed up. And not having to go into office meant I didn't have to dress up or put on make-up or make sure my hair was nice enough. :) That saved time and effort too.
  3. I had to experiment and come up with some new stuff for meal plans. One of the best things I experimented with was rice balls haha. Delicious. Alyssa loves them and K does too...:)
  4. I went off my anti-acid medication, having taken the last Omeprazole pill on 23 Mar 2020. Most of my meals are now home-cooked ones. My stomach feels better and I can take more things compared to the middle of last year.
  5. I got more time and flexibility and went for more (and longer) walks. I hope to continue this though and build up on it.
  6. K got to experiment with his baking stuff. We went ballistic and made tons of banana cakes over a week. One or two a day...lol...and gave them out to relatives and friends.
  7. We tweaked our daily schedules and now K fetches the girls back home from school everyday, instead of us heading to my inlaws' place for dinner. Now we settle everything at home ourselves.
  8. I took on a new challenge at work, expanded my portfolio by a considerable amount, inherited 3 new staff, hired another new staff for my team, and am learning and growing in terms of work. Blessed and thankful to have 2 good members on my team who are steady enough. The other 2 junior staff are a handful sometimes and miss the mark but...I'll see how it goes. Thankful too for the big lady boss who thought of me for the expanded role, the big boss who supported the idea, and my immediate boss who also supported the idea and has given me alot of support and encouragement.

There are definitely some other good stuff that I am thankful for but I'll stop at these main ones...

May 2021 bring an abundance of good stuff to the girls, K and I. And may we stay blessed, happy and healthy always. Onwards and upwards!! Huat ah!

Boxing Day

And suddenly....whoosh! Xmas Eve and Xmas Day 1 is over.

I think I've not been eating enough carbs these few days + neckaches + some measure of anxiety and frustration have led to me feeling a little fatigued and exhausted on some days. Especially on Xmas eve and even on Xmas morning itself.

Some frustration because...I took 2 weeks' leave to have time to unwind and have some time to myself and settle the things I want to settle (packing the house, nuah-ing, etc)...but I ended up still having to handle some pieces of work, and there are also some team lunch obligations I have to deal with. I'm anti-social these days...I don't want to keep meeting office folks, especially NOT WHEN I AM ON LEAVE. But some obligations...I cannot quite refuse...sigh. I don't deal very well these days with too many social stuff. Drains me of my energy.

A little grouchy, a little touchy, a little sensitive, and a little itchy.

Itchy cos...I've been doing packing and throwing things away. And stirring up dustballs. My eyes are a little itchy, my nose is a little irritated and my face is itchy too. I wear a mask at home now when I'm packing lol.

Just want some quiet time tonight...to either watch videos, listen to chill music, or colour or read...

And oh ya, reminder to myself to take more carbs like rice and noodles...I need the starch...it's like my battery fluid.

And oh oh ya, K packed the storeroom yesterday and emptied half of it...We threw away tons of stuff. I'm happy. :) 6.5 years of accumulated junk. Reduced to half...yay. My own Marie Kondo...

To the Lady Who Was Crossing the Road While Using Her Phone

Please be careful.

Please keep your eyes off your phone when you are crossing the road.

If you want to kill yourself on the road, by all means, we will respect your decision.

But please don't bring harm to innocent drivers.

Don't suddenly appear from behind a parked tall van and continue crossing the road, head down and concentrating on the phone, like you own the road and the whole world will stop for you.

Please be careful.

You are someone's sister, daughter, mother, wife, friend and loved one too...

不错的一天!

Today was one of those days I felt I did alot of things haha..

  • 8am. Blood test @ Bedok Poly.
  • Bought stuff from Watsons before heading home.
  • Had breakfast, settled work, had a discussion
  • 1120am. K came back from doing the groceries and we went to Nadya's school to collect her school books for next year.
  • We had lunch at Parkway's Yi Dian Xin, bought some stuff, then went home.
  • Cleared some work again, then showered and did my make-up while attending the parent company's year-end event. Think of it sort of like a virtual D&D with some lucky draw thrown in.
  • Had some concurrent work discussions as well while listening to the event.
  • Ran off for the Duckie dinner appointment at 550pm.
  • K picked me up, together with the girls. We drove down Orchard and admired the Xmas lighting and decorations adorning the buildings and streetlights.
  • Reached home. Put the girls to sleep. Showered.
  • Clearing some work now before catching some videos and then calling it a night.

Duckie Dinner

Had dinner with some of the Duckies today. EH, G & SS.
A 40yr-old, a 43 yr-old, a 49yr-old and a 62yr-old. lol...Odd combi lol...

Conversations tend to be dominated by one or 2 folks. Fine by me...but when it's like this 90% of the time, it does get a little tiring. And when 90% of the time, things are revolving around the same topic/issue, it does get a little tiring too. Wasn't a gathering supposed to be an update session of sorts from all parties?

Still, I was happy to see all of them. It's been 2 years since I last saw G & SS! How time flies. I remember how I gained the courage and inspiration to get myself checked out by a psychiatrist after I heard SS' story of how he went for counselling to overcome some of his difficulties and to learn how to manage his (very trying) relationship with his mother.

I am still thankful to this day that I had dinner with G & SS on Boxing Day in 2018.

Main topics centred around health issues today. I noticed it's been this way with a lot of catch-ups in recent years with various folks. Health, kids, work. 老了,大家都老了...

Food was good as usual at Cedele. Fish Coriander Pesto Pasta is my go-to main dish at Cedele. Always. Except that today, at this outlet at Wheelock, it had a whole lot of edamame thrown into it. At least 2-3 tablespoonfuls. I have quite some disdain for those beans and had to pick them out. Luckily they were concentrated at one portion of the pasta and the beans were big enough to be picked out easily haha.

The pasta & grilled seabass were still excellent. :)

Lobster

And so yesterday...

Laoniang did a calendula peel-off face mask. I'd done it several times in the past with NO ISSUE. I even did a patch test last time to be sure I'm not allergic to it.

Just applied it yesterday and received a call from my legal counsel. Originally intended to lie in bed for awhile but with the call coming in, I started walking around and unknowingly popped by my balcony for a few minutes (maybe 5mins or less?) and then went back into my room.

After I put down the phone. I went into the bathroom and saw that the skin areas where the mask was on seemed pink...hmm...was I seeing things? Cannot be...I've used this before and I had no allergies.

Went to a different mirror under different lighting and saw the same thing. Things didn't look right so I took off the peel right away. By then the mask had been on my face for 15mins.

FML.

My face was red, even after rinsing with water. Circles around the eyes and around the mouth where the mask was not applied were ok. Skin felt quite warm too but at least it was not itchy.

All I could think of was...oh shit shit shit... I need to go to the doc now!

I looked like an idiot with a pink face and 3 circles around the eyes and mouth. K said I looked like a strawberry. How considerate of him to describe me in a nice manner.

Was quite kancheong cos...face leh!! OMG.....

So off to the doc we went...Doc said some products are rich with Vitamin A which will make the skin look plump after using, but which can be quite photosensitive i.e. dun go into the sun while using or immediately after using.

The sun?

Oh ya, I was in the balcony while using the mask....but even that partially shaded light could cause such a reaction? And I was only out there for less than 5mins too....Maybe my skin's more sensitive....

Was given anti-histamine...

I was thankful for the redness went away on its own within 30-45mins...I still popped a pill just to be sure.

K was laughing at me....and at the whole situation....lol.

Praying for Peace

I just want a peaceful December to close off the challenging year.

For some reason though, I still have...

  • A contract negotiation going on where both parties are making life difficult for each other. If the almost 20-year partnership falls through, it will be an operational nightmare for my team and the technical guys.
  • 2 big government-related enforcement cases that are taking long to conclude...and one of it has gone all the way up to the Ministry level...zzz..
Praying for peace, an alignment of stars and all things nice, and things to smoothen themselves out soon...

Soon-to-be Grandma!

First time ever that I had a T. Ionantha bloom under my care. As usual with Ionanthas, there were 2 stamens.

The first bloomed on 6 Dec and the second stamen bloomed and revealed its stigma this morning.

I learnt some tips from YouTube and with a small paintbrush, I've collected the pollen from the stamens and pollinated the stigmas....

Let's hope there'll be seeds in the future!

Once the blooms wither in the next few days, this plant will be pushing pups out thereafter. I hope there'll be at least 2 pups.....yay, I'm gonna be an Ionantha grandma soon!

Thankful

But.
For all the laments.

I am still thankful.
I should be.

For.

I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food on the table, and a job.
I have a family I love deeply.
My parents and inlaws are generally well, able and fiercely independent.
I have a helper.
I have friends I can talk to and who understand me.
I have friends who still stick around after all these years.
The girls are growing well.
I have a good boss, nice colleagues, a smart big boss, and an equally smart big big boss who provide good guidance.
I am able-bodied and relatively well enough.

What gives?

When 5 hours of your workday was taken up by calls and meetings...

When you have other things to rush out...

When your staff are waiting for your guidance and pointers on how to proceed with difficult cases

When you bosses are waiting for your updates on policy issues that are in the Ministry's radar

When you could not read a storybook to your daughter during dinner

When your kids and husband are waiting for you to settle work and finish dinner before going out as a family for ice-cream

When you feel your stomach tensing up again

When that bloody ache in your neck and left shoulder has brought about a slight headache now as well

What gives?

Pray tell, what gives?

==========

Wolfed down dinner in 12mins because the kids and Kyne were ALL waiting for me to be done with dinner before we could head out on our usual Friday night jaunt to a dessert place. Didn't want to disappoint any of them.

I hope my stomach won't act up. Eating too fast triggers reflux too.
It's been a not so good week for my stomach...cramps last Saturday, queasiness on and off for the rest of the days...Diarrhoea on Sunday night and last night...

I hope it settles down soon. K wants to head out for another ramen fix...

When you're busy and inundated with calls and emails...and you can only start working on your to-do item for the day at 445pm.....

When you look back at your whole day and afternoon and wonder what shit have I been doing?!
